I love music. I listen to all kinds of different music, though I suppose dance and pop are my favorite genres. In any case, as I was out for a walk with my dog, a new song shuffled through my iTunes collection and it really struck home with me. The song is called “Half of Me” and is written by Emeli Sande and Naughty Boy and is performed by Rihanna on her latest album Unapologetic.
So why did it resonate with me? It’s a song about seeing her on the television and assuming you know all about her life. In truth, that is just the half of it. I can relate to this as a blogger. I can assume many bloggers who blog about their lives in one way or another and put themselves out there so publicly can relate to this. As much as I write about on here, or say on twitter, it’s just the half of it. Yet, this is the life I live. You may think you know me, but there is so much more to know and so much more that makes me who I am. So much goes on the blog, but so much doesn’t.
This song just expresses that so wonderfully in my opinion.
You saw me on a television
Setting fire to all the buildings
Yeah I guess you saw me stealing
But you’ve no idea what I’ve been needing
Talk about when we were children
Not the kinda kid that you believe in
You saw me on a television
Saw me on a televisionThat’s just the half of it
Yeah you saw the half of it
This is the life I live
And that’s just the half of itYou saw me on a television
Hanging on my dirty linen
You’re entitled to your own opinion
Said you shake your head in my decision
I guess the kinda songs that I been singing
Make it seem as if I’m always winning
But you saw me on a television
Yeah you saw on a televisionBut that’s just the half of it
You saw the half of it, yeah
This is the life I live
And that’s just the half of itOh you know me, I’m the life of the party
Beautiful people surround me
Everybody falling in love
Oh you know me, everybody knows that I’m crazy
Sticks and stones, they never break me
And I’m the type that don’t give a fuckAnd that’s just the half of it
You saw the half of it
Yeah this the life I live
And that’s just the half of itYeah you saw the half of it
And this is the life I live
You saw the half of it
Only the half of it, hey, no…You saw me on a television
Saw me on a television
You read it in a blogpost. Hanging out my dirty linens. You’re entitled to your opinions. Shake your head at my decisions. I make it sound like my life is always winning, because you read it in a blogpost. But that’s just the half of it. I may be the life of the party, surrounded by love, traveling from here to there. Strong and independent, sticks and stones don’t break me. My, “I don’t give a fuck” attitude. But that’s just the half of it. Yet, this is the life I lead. You read it in a blogpost, saw it in a tweet, but you have no idea, just how much it’s just the half of it.

Great post and very true! Yes, I can definitely relate too!
Rebel xox
thank you.
There are so many facets to any one person, no matter what or how many perspectives you glimpse of theirs, no outsider will ever have all the puzzle pieces that make the whole.
The complexity of people is why the journey into any story is so entertaining and awakening.
so very true
This is very poignant.
Although… I think anyone who puts themselves in the public eye, even a little, should do so – as you have – knowing that people will assume they know them, and make plenty of other assumptions aside. It’s just a fact of the way we share ourselves. It is, however, good to highlight it like so from time to time.
Oh absolutely. I know very well people will always assume things about me or think they know everything about me. It was why doing that post a few months ago on the assumptions made about me was kind of fun to write.
