Seize the day!
Yesterday, at the end my hike with my dog, she had a seizure. Of course, at the time, it hadn’t been diagnosed as such. She was walking behind me, I looked at her and her head was cocked to the side, dramatically so, as if something had gotten into her ear. The tilt continued so much that it lifted her front foot with it. She was still trying to walk around like that when I stopped her to see what had happened. She laid down on the ground, her one eye half closed and her body tense. I called Sylvanus immediately, asking him to please find a vet so we could take her. I picked up my dog and walked her to the vet’s office. (There happens to be one right where we live). My dog was still stiff when I picked her up, but had come out of if not long after.
The vet said it looked like an epileptic seizure with the details I was able to give. Being 4 years old was also the right age at which dog’s begin to have seizures. We had blood work done to rule out any organ failures. Anything wrong with her liver could induce seizures. Her blood work came back normal. The only other possibility is a heart condition. My dog had been chasing chamois in the forest 15 min before the seizure happened. That would take an xray to confirm.
As of right now, the verdict is epileptic seizure. There’s nothing we can really do except see what time will bring us. Our dog may never have another seizure. Or she may have one ever month, twice a year or twice every 10 years. All we can do is see what happens. Obviously, if she begins having seizures on a regular basis, the discussion of putting her on medication will be had.
As of now, I am just thankful for another day with my dog. Seize the day.

I am so sorry hun. A best friends of mine’s beagle had the same kind of seizures and having seen one, I know the panic you and Sylvanus must have felt. *hugs*
What a lovely heart felt post. The photo is so symbolic of your love for your puppy.
Our cat has the same problem Mina. And I hope for you and your pup it turns out as our situation did. It first happened over 8 years ago and they only occur about twice a year at the most. It is very scary for him and us when they do happen, but aside from that he has no issues from them and has lived a long happy life! May it be the same for you guys!
These sorts of HNTs are the absolute best, in my opinion. Wonderful pic!
Hope that this was just a one-time thing. But keep on hugging the stuffing out of him regardless!
I am sorry Mina. My baby, my best friend, my companion also had epilepsy, he was a very large dog and it broke my heart to watch, it was very scary. My heart goes out to you and my thoughts are for a manageable condition :)
Beth
get your vet to prescribe potassium bromide…my mothers jack russel had that n the PBsolved most of it.
Thanks, I’m not going to worry about putting my dog on anything until she has had more than one seizure and in close proximity to each other. The only thing I’m going to worry about having in my home is the emergency meds in case she ever does have another seizure and it lasts longer than 2 minutes.
Beautiful post and picture, Mina. Could the move, changes in climate, atmosphere, etc. have anything to do with it? Hoping that she remains well and seizure free.
Oh Mina… this brought tears to my eyes. Honestly!
I’m so happy for you that your dog is okay and hope that this can be written off as a one off experience, that it will never happen again and she’s just healthy & happy from now on!
Oh, I’m SO glad she’s okay! There would be some very sad children in my house (and a sad mama) if anything happened to M…
I know it may sound goofy, but I believe that positive thinking helps everything.
So if you think positively that it is a one time thing it will be more apt to never happen again.
So sorry to hear about your pet’s health scare. The HNT picture was beautiful and touching. Hoping everything will be okay.
Mina, I used to have a Pomeranian dog when I was growing up. He had epilepsy and was on a daily medication. He had regular seizures but they were greatly diminished by the medication. He lived a full and happy and mostly healthy life. Try not to worry.
No sense worrying about something I can’t control. I’m not worried at all. Time will tell. :)
