mina’s thoughts on the “big news”

Unless you live under a rock, or are a new reader, you have probably heard by now that Sylvanus and I are moving to Switzerland! However, I haven’t expressed what my thoughts are on this…

When Sylvanus told me the news, my mind went immediately to my volunteer job and I began to cry. I love where I volunteer and my intentions were to get hired there. In all honesty, my volunteer job is what keeps me from being completely miserable here. When I am there, I am happy. I feel like I belong there and I’ve made some good, dare I say, friends. So the thought of volunteering for so many months now, making new friends, warming up to the prospect of finally having a job and now having it crumble down was hard to take. The one shining thought I have is that it’s not necessarily over. As it stands, the move is temporary. In theory, I will be back here in 2 years.

Now…. I love Switzerland. It’s a second home of sorts for me. At least more so when I was a child. I am a citizen by birth right. Both my parents come from the french speaking part of this beautiful country, which gives me dual citizenship even though I was born in the US. My recent trip this year has ignited a spark of love for Switzerland. As a child, I never appreciated it. Found it much more boring than the US. As an adult, however, I appreciate the differences much more.

What I love about Switzerland: The dining. Oh how I love the food. Everything tastes different there. It’s fresher, it’s tastier. The portions are smaller. I was never made to eat US sized portions of food. It’s far too much. I love the relaxed style of living there. You walk or ride the bus and train to get anywhere. Maybe even a bike or scooter. You can get away with only owning one car per household or maybe not even owning one at all. Restaurants function differently. If you are in a hurry, don’t eat at one. Waitresses don’t visit tables frequently. They leave you alone and let you take as much time as you need. When you need them, just wave at them. It is not uncommon, nor rude, to sit down at a table for an hour and only have a cup of coffee. In fact, it is a way of living in the afternoon. I am looking forward to losing a lot of weight there. Sure, I’ll be gorging on freshly made bread and croissants, pastries and ice creams, but somehow, I still managed to lose weight while in Switzerland. Perhaps it’s just the more active lifestyle? Let’s not forget the chocolate is phenomenal!

Switzerland is also a very dog friendly country. I am extremely happy about this. I can take our pup on the trains and to cafes. Except for grocery stores, she can probably come into any store with me. She is also not limited to only outdoor seating at restaurants. I have seen dogs inside of restaurants as well and I didn’t notice any service dog apparel on them.

My relatives are all in Switzerland. Though they are practically strangers to me due to distance, I have all of my family, except my mother, in Switzerland. It will be nice to be in the same country as my family. Even if it won’t be in the same region. Plus, my mom is already planning a 2 month trip out to Switzerland next year!

What worries me about the move: We are moving to the German speaking region of Switzerland. I do not speak German at all. What makes things harder is that each German region of Switzerland speaks their own version of German. It’s complicated. However, everyone who speaks Swiss German understands high German. In any case, I am concerned about my sanity. I’m a little scared that I will be even lonelier there than I am here in upstate NY. Being in Switzerland though, makes it a little easier to swallow.

There will be a lot of little things missing in our lives that we have grown used to. TV for instance. Good bye to our tv shows and netflix. We are hoping to be able to have someone host our TiVo and slingbox while we are away. That way we can still watch our shows even all the way in Switzerland. Well, what about just watching through the internet on the show’s site, you ask? Most shows will not play in Europe. You get a blocked message for that show to stream in your region. It’s why we bought a slingbox to begin with so Sylvanus could watch shows while he was in Switzerland for 2 months. I’ll miss some of the food you can only find in the US. Like BBQ for instance. I’m sure there’s a lot of little American things I will miss.

There’s a lot to be excited for about this move and a lot to be scared about. One thing for sure though, this is an opportunity that can’t be turned down!

Product Review~ Lelo Insignia, Isla

Getting Familiar

Isla is made of body safe PC ABS and silicone in a matte finish. I’m sure you have noticed that the Insignia line looks much different than anything LELO has made before, with a light metallic-coated ABS core. Charging takes 2 hours and lasts for a total of 4 hours of play. It has a three button interface with six modes of vibrations. The + and – buttons allow you to increase or decrease the intensity of the vibrations and the button in the middle changes the vibration mode.
