It is time for another Sex Toy Battle. After the previous faceoff between Lily and Laya, LELO and Fun Factory cross swords again as LELO introduces their take on the Ben Wa Balls, the Luna Beads. We do have a standing rule here at Longing’s End: If LELO does their version of anything, we will test it. If LELO chose to make a weedwacker, you would see a detailed review here. Of course, Luna Beads face a steep hill as the Fun Factory Smartballs are long-established in our Pantheon of Must Have Sex Toys. So, let’s see how Swedish design fares against German Engineering in this round of the Sex Toy Battle.
The Package
Well, it’s LELO. The Luna Beads meet every standard LELO has always had. The beautiful black box, the fitted trays:
Under the tray is the typically complete LELO kit with instructions and carrying bag.
Getting Familiar
Uniquely, the Luna Beads actually have two sets of weights.

The pink set weighs in at 28 grams, and the blue set is 37 grams. They can be mixed and matched to your heart’s content. The Luna manual is in typical LELO detail, but here their medically-precise wording comes off as more intimidating in this context. Here is a fair sample:
COMPOSITION
The foundation beads can be used individually or combined with a crown bead utilizing the composition girdle.
1. Thread the retraction leash, on the foundation bead of your choice, through the leash opening in the foundation bead nook on the composition girdle.
2. Push the foundation bead into place, making sure the edges of the nook firmly slot into place and trace the contours of the girdle guide imprint on the foundation bead.
3. Select a crowd bead. Push the bead into place, making sure the edges of the crown nook firmly slot into place and trace the contours of the girdle guide imprint on the crown bead.
It should be said, to LELO’s credit that they don’t assume you will know anything about to use their product, so they tell you everything you could possibly want to know about how they work, what they do, and precisely where they should be put in the body. I tease LELO for the tone of their writing, but they should be applauded for educating their customers.
The “composition girdle,” the white silicone band, is fairly tight, and it takes some persistence to get the bead to align correctly in the girdle, but it comes with the lighter-weight pink beads installed. This is certainly enough to get one started.
Putting it to work
It is customary for me to wear my Smartballs all day while I am at work. This time, for the Luna Beads first try, I wore it on a Saturday which is my day off. I wore it for most of the day. Like the Smartballs, the beads rattle around within you. It is an interesting sensation to get used to. It’s a strange feeling to feel something moving around every time you move. Eventually, your body always gets used to it and by the end of your time wearing them, you barely notice they are there.
These beads, like the Smartballs, work your inner muscles ladies! It’s a little workout for your vagina. After you have been wearing them for awhile, they tighten you up. Here is the benefit for you men out there… your lady gets a nice tight vagina. At least that’s what Sylvanus has told me. He says I get nice and tight and his cock has all the benefits.
The downfall to the Luna beads is the leash, the little loop that you use to pull the bead out from your body. The leash for the Luna beads is made from what looks like a type of string. This has me a littler nervous about cleaning it, as well as maybe it breaking sometime in the distant future.
Another downfall I noticed, the beads seemed to have collected some fluid within them. I’m not sure how or what, but there was clearly a little bit of wetness inside of the beads. I don’t think that is normal. I don’t see how it is possible since the beads are not designed to come apart. They have since dried.
So all in all, the Luna beads have an advantage over the Smartballs, because they offer a heavier set of beads. If I had to pick one though, I’d have to say go with the Smartballs by Fun Factory. They cost less, I like the way they were designed and manufactured and they function just the same as the Luna beads.
The Showdown
Okay, let’s put the two combatants side-by-side:
The two are virtually identical in size. The lighter, pink weights in the Luna beads seem to be the same weight as the Smartballs. This is a point in favor of the Luna beads, since you can switch up to heavier weights. The leash on each one feels different. The Smartballs leash feels like a smooth synthetic material, whereas the Luna beads seem to have, well, ordinary string. It seems like a very strange, and weirdly unpolished choice, especially coming from LELO. Lastly, there is that nontrivial issue of cost. The Luna Beads come with the typically hefty LELO price tag, whereas Smartballs are not as much.
Conclusions
It is very hard to recommend Luna Beads over the Smartballs. Between the cheap feel of the string, and the mysterious fluid appearing inside the beads, there are a lot of questions about the finish of the product. At twice the price of the Smartballs, and the extremely similar form factor, there is very little daylight in the function category. If you find that the Smartballs just don’t offer enough stimulation, it is worth looking into the Luna Beads for their heavier weights. Aside from that, this one is a clear win for the Germans.

As we were looking around, I spotted him. “He” stood 7″ inches with 1-½” girth and was perfectly poised on the intricately designed shelfing unit. I almost blushed and forgot all about the girl I came in with.”

Or you could just clip a weight onto the retrieval loop of your SmartBalls.
